Goals of this grant program are increased citizen knowledge of their community and increased citizen engagement. Grants may be utilized for costs in support of launching a citizens academy, for example to fund supplies, printing, promotion, transportation, or refreshments.  It is a priority to fund citizen academies in all regions and diverse communities.

Paid Internship Program

 This program will provide grants to museums, heritage areas, history organizations and sites, other nonprofits, state, county, and municipal governments, and tribal entities throughout Maryland to hire a paid intern and pay a mentor stipend. No matching funds are required to receive these funds.

Funds shall be used to support research, programming, and interpretive projects that seek to deepen public understanding of our complex history.  Eligible applicants must be located within the state of Maryland, and may include museums, heritage areas, history organizations or sites, other nonprofits, state, county, or municipal governments, and tribal entities.    

In 2023, Governor Moore authorized the Maryland 250 Commission and charged the entity with developing, encouraging, and executing an inclusive statewide observance of the 250th anniversary of the founding of our nation in 2026, with three themes: history, civics, and service.   


The Maryland Mosaic is a collection of mosaic pieces, each of which is a unique contribution from Maryland to the nation’s evolution. A Mosaic piece is a person, place, event, object, document, or building that initially took place in Maryland but affected the whole nation.  

Founded in 1952, the Prince George's County Historical Society, is all-volunteer, non-profit organization works to fulfill its mission of preserving and promoting the County’s long and diverse history. It operates the Frederick DeMarr Library in the Greenbelt Branch of the Prince George's County Memorial Library System.

Established in 1969, the Prince George’s County Genealogical Society is the oldest Maryland county genealogical society in continuous existence. Its objectives are to collect, preserve, and disseminate genealogical knowledge and information, particularly material that deals with Prince George’s County, Maryland.  

American Association of State and Local History (AASLH) is providing leadership, research, resources, and events for history doers and organizations to help them engage the public in a full history of the country as we approach this significant milestone.



The National Park Service joins the nation in the commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 2026. The aspirational vision in the Declaration defines the ideals that set the United States on a course of continued work toward a more perfect union. 



To commemorate and celebrate our 250th anniversary with inclusive programs that inspire Americans to renew and strengthen our daring experiment in democracy. The shared experiences of America250 will have ignited our imaginations, elevated our diverse stories, inspired service in our communities, and demonstrated the lasting durability of the American project. 



The United States will turn 250 in 2026, with Gen Z at the helm. But young adults are disengaged from our institutions and under-represented in our democracy. They are looking to understand "how we got here" as they shape our future. The Made By Us network represents hundreds of history museums stepping up to serve as civic hubs for young adults. We pool our knowledge, stories and efforts to meet younger generations where they are with timely, relevant information from credible sources.

The Maryland Historical Trust is the state agency dedicated to preserving and interpreting the legacy of Maryland’s past. Through research, conservation and education, the Maryland Historical Trust assists the people of Maryland in understanding their historical and cultural heritage.  



The Maryland Heritage Areas Coalition represents Maryland's thirteen Heritage Areas individuals, businesses, nonprofits and governments form partnerships to preserve the best of Maryland's historic sites and towns, unspoiled natural landscapes and enduring traditions. This program provides targeted financial and technical assistance within thirteen designated Heritage Areas, each of which has a distinct focus or theme that represents a unique aspect of Maryland’s character. 

Championing the humanities across a state as diverse as Maryland requires many contributors and much collaboration. That’s where the Maryland Humanities Marilyn Hatza Memorial SHINE Grant Program comes in: Strengthening the Humanities Investment in Nonprofits for Equity. 

Established in 1996, the Heritage Fund is a cooperative effort of Preservation Maryland and the Maryland Historical Trust, which provides direct assistance for the protection of historical and cultural resources and promotes innovative demonstration projects that can be successfully replicated to meet Maryland’s historic preservation needs.  

The goal of the African American Heritage Preservation Program (AAHPP) is to identify and preserve buildings, communities and sites of historical and cultural importance to the African American experience in Maryland. This competitive program, offered once per year, is supported through an annual appropriation from the Maryland General Assembly, and is administered as a joint partnership of the Maryland Commission on African American History and Culture (MCAAHC) and the Maryland Historical Trust (MHT).  

The Thomas V. “Mike” Miller Jr. History Fund provides support for projects at museums, historical societies, libraries, and other repositories throughout the state of Maryland. The goal is to build the long-term resiliency and efficacy of Maryland’s historical collections stewards. The Miller History Fund is made possible by an annually recurring allocation to the Maryland Center for History and Culture from the state’s Preservation of Cultural Arts Fund. 

July 4, 2026, is our nation’s 250th anniversary. The National Archives is celebrating Declaration250: the spirit of equality and liberty enshrined in the Declaration of Independence, 250 years of our nation’s resilience and pursuit of happiness, and our collective growth toward a more perfect nation. 

The Association for Living History, Farm and Agricultural Museums serves those involved in living historical farms, agricultural museums and outdoor museums of history and folklife. Since its founding in 1970, ALHFAM has been at the forefront of the growth and professionalization of the use of living history techniques in museum programs. ALHFAM members and member institutions can be found across the United States and Canada and in many other countries. 

Founded in 1967, The Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC) is an agency of the State of Maryland's Department of Commerce that plays an essential role, ensuring every person has access to the transformative power of the arts. MSAC advances the arts in our state by providing leadership that champions creative expression, diverse programming, equitable access, lifelong learning, and the arts as a celebrated contributor to the quality of life for all the people of Maryland.


Funding from the National Trust for Historic Preservation is awarded to nonprofit organizations and public agencies, and the majority of our funding is awarded for planning and education projects through our National Trust Preservation Funds grant program. Grant requirements vary and applications are due at various times of the year, depending on the program. The American Alliance of Museums (AAM) mission is to champion equitable and impactful museums by connecting people, fostering learning and community, and nurturing museum excellence. The American Alliance of Museums (AAM) is the only organization representing the entire museum field, from art and history museums to science centers and zoos. Our Alliance of 35,000 museums and museum professionals seeks to better our communities, and our world, through collaborative human-centered experiences, education, and connection to histories, cultures, the natural world, and one another. 

The Association of African American Museums (AAAM) is a non-profit member organization established to support African and African American focused museums nationally and internationally, as well as the professionals who protect, preserve and interpret African and African American art, history and culture. Established as the single representative and principal voice of the African American museum movement, the Association seeks to strengthen and advocate for the interests of institutions and individuals committed to the preservation of African-derived cultures. The services provided by AAAM enhance the ability of those museums to serve the needs and interests of persons of African ancestry and those who wish to know more about the art, history and culture of African-derived cultures.


The Maryland Museums Association is a volunteer-managed alliance of institutions that collect, hold, interpret, and protect the material and cultural heritage of the Free State. We advocate for state museum funding, equity in the profession, and authentic interpretation of our shared histories in service of increased cultural understanding.
